approximately 1 month after the attack on Pearl Harbor
Dear Mom and Dad,
I'm writing to you from Hawaii, to let you know that I am okay. Last months attack on Pearl Harbor was extremely frightening and equally horrific. i wasn't in school when the attacks happened, i was in my apartment in the next town over. Although I was reasonably far away, I still heard the explosions and sounds of planes descending over the harbor. It is a very scary time for the nation, and now that we are facing war, times will inevitably be hard for all of us.
I have heard a lot of things about the war that is taking place in the pacific, since it is close to where I am. The Japanese are very strong and gaining power quickly. There Imperial navy is very strong and they have conquered most of the Pacific islands. Their leader, Hideki Tojo, who is prime minister of Japan, is an evil and heartless man who has nothing on his mind but destruction. Their air force, too, is quite interesting. A new military strategy they have invented is the suicide bombers, also known as the Kamikaze. They are young men trained to crash their bomb loaded planes into enemy ground forces, boats, and land in order to destroy everything around them and kill the enemy. Many casualties have resulted from these suicide attacks.
The US Navy's Pacific fleet has been severely depleted as a result of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, and I fear greatly that something else horrible might happen. Now that the US is at war with Germany, Italy, and Japan all at once, it is certain that there will be much more fighting to happen in the near future. For now, I will try to get back into school and focus on working hard in hopes that I will stay alive. Dont worry about me too much!! Say hi to Aunt Nancy and Uncle Jim for me.
-Love your daughter,
